Description

The Zambezian spider mite (Tetranychus zambezianus) belongs to the family Tetranychidae within the order Trombidiformes. As a specialized phytophagous mite, it primarily impacts plants in sub-Saharan African regions, thriving in warm environments and colonizing both wild and cultivated plant species.

This pest affects a variety of plant hosts, including ornamental species and agricultural crops. Due to its opportunistic nature, it can rapidly colonize greenhouse environments, causing severe economic losses if the population density is not managed effectively during the early stages of infestation.

The biological cycle of this mite is highly temperature-dependent, consisting of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Favorable conditions allow for multiple generations to overlap, creating a constant pressure of infestation. Their ability to produce silk webbing provides essential protection against environmental stressors and some predators.

Damage is characterized by the puncturing of leaf cells, leading to the destruction of chloroplasts. Initial symptoms appear as chlorotic spots, which eventually coalesce into larger necrotic areas. The presence of fine webbing on the abaxial side of the leaf is a definitive sign of colonization, often followed by leaf wilting, abscission, and significant reduction in photosynthesis.

Effective management and control strategies include the following:

  • Application of targeted acaricides, ensuring rotation to prevent the development of chemical resistance.
  • Management of environmental factors, such as increasing air humidity, to suppress the mite's reproductive rate.
