Description

The garter snake (genus Thamnophis) belongs to the family Colubridae, order Squamata. Native primarily to North America, these reptiles thrive in moist environments such as meadows, wetlands, and residential gardens. From an agronomic perspective, it is critical to state that these snakes are not pests of agricultural crops.

The biology of the garter snake is characterized by viviparity (live birth). Their life cycle is deeply dependent on environmental temperatures, leading them to undergo brumation, a form of dormancy similar to hibernation, during colder months when they congregate in underground dens to survive the winter frost.

As predators, their diet consists primarily of amphibians, earthworms, small fish, and occasionally small rodents. In agricultural settings, they function as beneficial biological control agents by helping to manage populations of small vermin that might otherwise feed on garden produce or damage field crops.

There is no evidence of garter snakes damaging plants. They do not consume plant matter, nor do they pose a risk to stems, roots, or fruit. Their presence within a field or greenhouse does not equate to a decrease in yield or the destruction of economic assets, thus categorizing them as neutral or beneficial fauna.
