Red-legged clerid

The red-legged clerid (Thanasimus rufipes) is a predatory beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cleridae. It is a highly specialized insect known for its role as a natural predator of various bark beetles, making it an essential component of forest biodiversity and health.

While often classified alongside forest pests, the red-legged clerid is technically a beneficial insect that targets tree-killing pests such as the spruce bark beetle. Its presence in a forest stand is almost always linked to the presence of high populations of bark beetles, which utilize the decaying or stressed wood as a breeding ground.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, with both the larval and adult stages acting as predators.
