Poplar-woodrush aphid

The poplar-woodrush aphid (Thecabius gravicornis) is a specialized insect species belonging to the family Aphididae. It is a migratory aphid that demonstrates a complex alternation of hosts, which is a critical aspect for understanding its population dynamics and planning integrated pest management strategies.

The primary host of this aphid is the poplar tree (Populus species). During the spring, the aphid colonizes the leaves, causing the formation of distinct galls where the colony develops. After several generations, winged forms appear, which migrate to the secondary hosts, typically members of the Luzula genus (woodrush), residing at the base of the plant or on the roots.

The life cycle begins with overwintering eggs deposited on the bark of poplar trees. As temperatures rise in spring, fundatrices hatch and initiate gall formation on young leaves. Throughout the summer, several parthenogenetic generations develop on the secondary host. As autumn approaches, winged sexuparae migrate back to the poplars to produce the overwintering generation.

Damage caused by Thecabius gravicornis is mainly expressed through the severe deformation of leaves on poplar trees. These galls provide protection for the aphids but compromise the structural integrity and photosynthetic efficiency of the leaves. In nursery environments, heavy infestation can lead to stunted growth and reduced vigor of young saplings, making them more susceptible to other stressors.

Control measures are most effective when applied early in the season. Systematic insecticide treatments during the bud-burst phase are essential to prevent the establishment of initial colonies. Furthermore, removing weed hosts such as woodrush around the perimeter of poplar nurseries can break the migration cycle. Cultural practices, such as pruning and disposing of heavily infested branches, help to mitigate population pressure.
