The genus Thecla, commonly known as hairstreaks, belongs to the family Lycaenidae within the order Lepidoptera. While many hairstreaks are considered ecologically important, certain species within this group can act as pests in orchards and tree nurseries, causing damage to foliage and young buds.

Primary target crops include members of the Rosaceae family, such as apples, plums, and wild cherries, as well as various birch species. These insects are particularly problematic in young orchards where the damage caused by caterpillars can stunt the development of saplings and affect the formation of the tree's structure.

The life cycle typically involves a single generation per year, with eggs serving as the overwintering stage. These eggs are usually deposited on twigs near the buds. As spring temperatures rise and buds begin to swell, the larvae hatch and start feeding on the tender tissues, moving to developing leaves as the season progresses.

Damage symptoms include irregular holes in leaves, shredded margins, and sometimes the complete destruction of dormant buds, which prevents normal leaf expansion. High pest density can lead to significant defoliation, which stresses the tree, reduces vigor, and negatively impacts the fruit yield in commercial orchards.

Control strategies should focus on integrated pest management:

  • Monitor for egg masses during late winter pruning to reduce the initial population.
  • Apply targeted insecticides during the early larval stage when caterpillars are most vulnerable.
  • Promote biodiversity by planting cover crops that support beneficial predatory wasps and spiders.
  • Use horticultural oils to suffocate eggs if infestation levels in the previous year were high.
