Description
Systematic position. The coloratus thrips (Thrips coloratus) belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. It is recognized as a significant polyphagous pest that causes substantial economic losses in various agricultural sectors, particularly in warm and temperate climates.
Host plants. This pest exhibits a wide range of host plants, feeding on numerous agricultural and horticultural species. Common hosts include grain crops, legumes such as soybeans, vegetable crops (especially solanaceous plants), and a variety of ornamental flowers. The ability to survive on weeds makes it persistent in agricultural environments.
Biology and life cycle. The development cycle of Thrips coloratus includes the egg, two larval stages, prepupa, pupa, and adult stages. The speed of development is highly dependent on ambient temperature and humidity. Multiple generations can occur within a single growing season, allowing the population to explode quickly if conditions are favorable.
