Flower thrips

Thrips florum is a destructive insect species within the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. Originally found in tropical regions, this pest has become a significant threat to global agriculture and horticulture, often introduced into new territories via international trade of ornamental and nursery plants.

This species has a vast host range, attacking various plant species. Key targets include ornamental flowers, such as roses and orchids, as well as essential fruit and vegetable crops like tomatoes, peppers, and various tropical fruits. The pest prefers soft plant tissues, focusing its activity on buds, flowers, and developing leaves, which often results in severe aesthetic and physiological damage.

The life cycle of Thrips florum consists of egg, two larval stages, prepupal, pupal, and adult stages. The female inserts eggs into plant tissues, which provides protection from external environmental factors. Development is highly temperature-dependent, and the insect can complete its generation cycle rapidly, leading to exponential population growth in warm greenhouse environments.

Damage caused by this pest is characterized by silvery streaks, stippling, and deformation of leaves and flowers. Infested buds may fail to open, and fruit quality is significantly degraded due to scarring and discoloration. Furthermore, Thrips florum is known to transmit several plant viruses, which can cause systemic infections that are often more destructive than the feeding damage itself.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Strategies include the use of sticky yellow or blue cards for early detection, maintaining high sanitation levels to remove infested plant debris, and releasing biological control agents such as predatory mites and pirate bugs. Chemical control should involve rotating active ingredients to prevent the development of insecticide resistance, ensuring that treatments are applied before population levels peak.
