Flax thrips

Flax thrips (Thrips lini) is a specialized insect pest that primarily affects flax crops. It belongs to the order Thysanoptera, family Thripidae. These small insects are difficult to detect due to their size and habit of sheltering within the tightly folded terminal leaves of the plant, often causing significant economic damage before they are even observed.

The primary host for this pest is the flax plant (both fiber and oilseed types). They exhibit a strong preference for the succulent tissues of young flax plants, extracting cell sap and causing systemic distress. While they may occasionally be found on associated weeds, the flax field remains the epicenter of their population dynamics throughout the growing season.

The life cycle of the flax thrips includes egg, larval, protonymph, nymph, and adult stages. The insects overwinter in the soil or under debris at the base of the plants. As spring temperatures rise, the adults emerge and migrate to the newly emerging flax shoots, where they feed and begin laying eggs in the tender leaf tissue, starting the cycle of infestation for the new season.

Damage caused by this pest is characterized by the appearance of silvery or whitish spots on leaves, which eventually turn brown. As the thrips feed on the terminal buds, the plants often exhibit stunted growth, leaf curling, and deformed stems. Severe infestations can result in the loss of flower buds, leading to a drastic reduction in both fiber quality and total seed yield.

Management and control strategies are essential for maintaining crop health and include:

• Deep tillage practices post-harvest to expose overwintering stages to cold and predators.
