Description
Systematic position: The New Zealand flower thrips (Thrips obscuratus) belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. This insect is a significant pest native to New Zealand, known for its ability to damage a wide variety of horticultural and floricultural crops.
Host plants: This pest has a very broad host range, feeding on both native and introduced plants. It causes the most severe economic damage to kiwifruit, stone fruits such as peaches, nectarines, and plums, as well as pome fruits and various ornamental flowering species.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg, two larval instars, prepupa, pupa, and adult. Eggs are inserted into plant tissues. The pupal stages typically occur in the soil or ground litter. Under favorable conditions, the species completes several generations per year, allowing its population to explode rapidly during the blooming season.
Damage and pest impact: The adults and larvae damage plants by sucking sap from pollen, petals, and developing fruitlets. This results in scarring, silvering, and necrotic spots on the fruit surface, significantly reducing marketability. Furthermore, the insect acts as a vector for various plant viruses, which can lead to systemic plant infections.
Protection measures: Management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach.
