Description

Systematic position: Melon thrips (Thrips palmi) belong to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. This insect is a significant polyphagous pest recognized worldwide as a serious quarantine threat, capable of causing devastating losses in both open-field and greenhouse agricultural production.

Crops affected: The pest has a very broad host range, feeding on over 200 plant species. Key hosts include vegetables like cucumbers, peppers, eggplants, and melons, as well as various ornamental species like orchids and chrysanthemums. Their ability to adapt to greenhouse environments makes them particularly difficult to eradicate.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg, two larval stages, prepupa, pupa, and adult. The entire development process can be completed in approximately 15 to 20 days under optimal warm conditions. Adults and larvae primarily inhabit the undersides of leaves, flowers, and terminal buds, moving rapidly between plants to feed and lay eggs.

Damage and pest status: Feeding damage manifests as silvering or bronzing of leaves, tissue necrosis, and severe stunting of growth. Infested plants show signs of leaf curling, flower drop, and fruit deformity. Beyond physical damage, Thrips palmi is a known vector of several tospoviruses, which can cause total crop failure in sensitive varieties.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies include:

  • Maintaining strict greenhouse sanitation and weed control.
  • Monitoring pest populations using blue or yellow sticky traps.
  • Introducing biological control agents, such as predatory mites and anthocorid bugs.
  • Utilizing fine-mesh screening to exclude adults from greenhouses.
  • Applying selective insecticides, ensuring rotation to manage resistance development.
