Gladiolus thrips (Thrips simplex) belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. It is a highly specialized pest known primarily for its destructive impact on gladiolus crops, though it can also infest various other ornamental bulbs and flowers within greenhouses and gardens.
The host range includes gladiolus, irises, lilies, and carnations. While the pest thrives outdoors during the growing season, it is particularly dangerous during the storage of corms, where it can cause complete destruction of planting material if temperature conditions are not strictly controlled.
The biology of Thrips simplex is characterized by a rapid reproductive cycle, which can be completed in as little as two weeks under warm conditions.
