Description
Nettle thrips (Thrips urticae) is a small insect belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. Although primarily associated with the family Urticaceae, it is recognized as a significant pest that can adapt to various cultivated crops in both greenhouse and field conditions.
These pests affect a broad range of plants, including ornamental flowers, vegetables, and field crops. By piercing the plant tissue and sucking the sap, they extract vital nutrients, causing localized cell death and systemic stress to the plant throughout the growing season.
The life cycle of Thrips urticae consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. They reproduce rapidly in warm conditions. Females insert their eggs into the leaf tissue, which makes the immature stages difficult to target with contact insecticides. The rapid generation turnover often leads to exponential population growth during the summer months.
The damage is characterized by distinct "silvering" or stippling on the leaves, combined with necrotic spots. Heavy infestations cause leaf curling, premature yellowing, and stunted plant development. Beyond direct damage, these thrips are known to be efficient vectors for various plant viruses, which can cause severe yield losses.
To control populations of Thrips urticae, growers should follow these practices:
- Monitor fields and greenhouses regularly using blue or yellow sticky traps to detect early infestations.
- Remove alternative hosts, especially weeds from the nettle family, from around production areas.
- Introduce natural predators such as predatory mites (e.g., Phytoseiulus) or pirate bugs (Orius).
- Use selective systemic insecticides when populations exceed the economic threshold, ensuring proper rotation to avoid resistance.
