The genus Tillus belongs to the family Cleridae, commonly known as checkered beetles, within the order Coleoptera. While many members of this family are predators, species in the genus Tillus often exhibit xylophagous habits, meaning their larvae spend a significant portion of their development boring into the wood of trees.

These beetles primarily target weakened, dying, or felled hardwood and softwood trees. In forestry, they are often categorized as secondary pests that colonize wood already compromised by other borers, such as longhorn beetles or bark beetles, although they can still cause considerable damage to timber resources.

The lifecycle follows a complete transformation pattern: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit eggs in bark crevices or preexisting galleries. The emerging larvae tunnel deep into the wood, creating complex networks of passages as they feed, which interferes with the vascular system of the tree and structural integrity of the timber.

The damage caused by Tillus is characterized by small, circular entry holes and the presence of fine wood dust (frass). The economic impact is primarily associated with the degradation of wood quality in forestry products and the potential acceleration of decay in trees that are already suffering from environmental stress or other primary infestations.
