The Blood-vein moth (Timandra griseata) is a moth species belonging to the Geometridae family within the order Lepidoptera. While primarily recognized as a wild insect, it can occasionally behave as a pest in agricultural settings, particularly affecting specific families of leafy plants through its larval stage.

The larvae, or caterpillars, of the Blood-vein moth exhibit a strong preference for plants within the Polygonaceae family. In agricultural environments, crops such as sorrel (Rumex) and rhubarb can become hosts. The presence of these larvae on such crops is often dictated by the proximity of the fields to natural habitats containing wild dock or knotweed.

The life cycle involves a metamorphosis process common to all Geometridae. The adult moths are nocturnal, which often leads to the infestation going unnoticed until visible damage appears on the leaves. The larvae are known for their distinct crawling movement, which allows them to traverse between leaves efficiently while feeding.

Damage caused by the larvae manifests as irregular holes in leaves and the consumption of leaf margins. Because the caterpillars feed on the plant foliage, they directly reduce the plant's photosynthetic capacity. While usually considered a minor pest, high population densities in favorable weather conditions can lead to noticeable cosmetic and physiological damage to crops.

Effective control measures include cultural and chemical interventions. Cultural methods involve the removal of alternative host weeds like wild Polygonaceae species from field margins. If populations exceed economic thresholds, the application of biological control agents, such as formulations containing Bacillus thuringiensis, or targeted chemical insecticides remains the most reliable strategy.
