Bloody-nosed beetle

The Bloody-nosed beetle (Timarcha tenebricosa) is a member of the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae) within the order Coleoptera. It is widely recognized by its rounded, flightless, metallic black body. Its common name originates from the defensive mechanism of secreting a drop of red hemolymph from its mouth when threatened by predators.

This beetle is primarily a specialist feeder on plants belonging to the Rubiaceae family, with Galium (bedstraw) being its primary host. While not classified as a major agricultural threat, large populations can significantly impact the health of cover crops and forage grasses when these are infested with host weeds, leading to competition for nutrients and physical damage to leaves.

The life cycle involves overwintering in the adult stage within soil crevices or dense leaf litter. During early spring, mating occurs, followed by the deposition of eggs on host plants. The larvae, which are also leaf-feeders, go through several developmental stages (instars) before pupating in the ground. Their nocturnal habits often make them go unnoticed until significant leaf loss occurs.

Damage caused by the beetle is characterized by irregular holes and scalloped margins on leaves. In severe cases, extensive defoliation can occur, reducing the plant's photosynthetic area and overall vigor. While they rarely destroy entire crops, their feeding activity can stunt plant growth and reduce the quality of forage in affected pastures.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for this beetle include strict field hygiene. Controlling the host weed populations (Galium spp.) is the most effective preventative measure. If intervention is required, contact insecticides applied during the peak activity of larvae can effectively reduce the population density. Avoiding chemical treatments during blooming periods is essential to protect non-target beneficial insects.
