Tineid moths

The genus Tinea belongs to the family Tineidae within the order Lepidoptera. These small moths are globally recognized as major pests of stored products and agricultural commodities. Characterized by their cryptic behavior and often drab coloration, these insects are highly adapted to indoor environments such as grain silos, warehouses, and processing facilities.

The primary crops affected by these pests include stored grains like wheat, barley, and corn, as well as various seeds and flour-based products. Because they can thrive on a diverse range of plant-based materials, Tinea species represent a persistent threat to global food security in storage settings, often damaging both the volume and quality of the stored goods.

The biology of Tinea follows a holometabolous life cycle, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The larvae are the primary damaging life stage; they are voracious feeders that spin silken galleries or cases to protect themselves while consuming the substrate. Depending on the environmental conditions, particularly temperature and humidity, the development time can vary significantly.

The damage caused by these pests is substantial. Larvae hollow out grain kernels, leaving behind empty husks webbed together with silk. This activity results in significant weight loss and contamination of the product with frass, webbing, and larval skins. Such contamination compromises the commercial value of the grain and renders it unsuitable for further processing or human consumption.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. The following measures are recommended for the control of Tineid moths:
