Flour moth

Tinea murariella, commonly known as the flour moth, belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tineidae. This species is a significant pest of stored agricultural products, recognized for its ability to thrive in various indoor environments where dry plant materials are stored.

The pest primarily infests stored cereals and processed derivatives. Its diet includes flour, bran, various grains, oilseeds, dried fruits, and herbal products. Because it is highly adaptable, it poses a recurring threat to warehouses, mills, and domestic storage facilities where grain-based products are kept for long periods.

Regarding its biology and lifecycle, the moth undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Females deposit eggs directly onto the food source. Upon hatching, larvae construct silken webs mixed with food particles, forming protective tunnels. This lifestyle protects them from external factors and makes detection in the early stages of infestation difficult.

The damage caused by this insect is extensive. Larvae contaminate the food supply with excrement, cast skins, and silk webbing, causing the product to clump together and become prone to fungal growth. The economic impact includes not only the direct loss of mass but also the significant loss of product quality and safety.

Effective protection measures focus on integrated pest management (IPM). Key strategies include regular facility sanitation, maintaining low humidity levels, and ensuring proper airflow. Monitoring using pheromone traps is essential for early detection. If infestations occur, chemical treatments or fumigation methods approved for use in storage areas are necessary to mitigate loss.
