This moth typically attacks stored grains, flour, processed cereals, dried fruits, and various animal-derived materials such as wool or feathers. While primarily a storage pest, it can occasionally thrive in nests or debris where organic matter accumulates, which serves as a reservoir for further infestation of warehouses.

The biology of Tinea translucens follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The development speed is highly dependent on ambient temperatures and humidity levels within the storage environment.
