The Common clothes moth (Tineola bisselliella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tineidae. While often viewed as a domestic nuisance, this pest is a significant threat in agricultural storage facilities, where it infests stored animal-based products such as raw wool, furs, and animal skins held as agricultural commodities.

The damage is caused exclusively by the larval stage of the moth. These larvae possess specialized enzymes that allow them to digest keratin, the primary structural protein in hair and wool. By feeding on these materials, the larvae create irregular holes and damage the structural integrity of the fibers, rendering stored materials unfit for sale or textile production.

The life cycle of the moth consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The entire life cycle can be completed in as little as a few months under favorable warm and humid conditions, allowing for multiple generations per year. Female moths lay eggs in concealed areas where the larvae have immediate access to food sources.

The economic impact of Tineola bisselliella can be severe for agricultural businesses dealing with animal raw materials. The presence of larvae is usually indicated by silk-lined tubes or trails on the surface of the infested material, along with accumulated frass. Large populations can cause massive devaluation of inventory through rapid consumption and contamination.
