Tischeria complanella, known as the oak leaf miner, is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tischeriidae. It is an insect specialized in feeding on various oak species, where it spends most of its larval life cycle concealed within the leaf tissue.
The life cycle typically involves two generations per year in temperate climates. The insect overwinters as a larva within the fallen leaves on the ground. Pupation occurs in the spring, followed by the emergence of adult moths that mate and lay eggs on the undersides of the developing oak leaves.
The larvae are specialized leaf miners. Upon hatching, they bore into the leaf and begin creating distinctive blotch-shaped mines. As the larva grows, the mine expands, often turning a brownish or grayish color. This destruction of the leaf parenchyma disrupts the tree's photosynthetic activity.
