Tomocerus minor

Tomocerus minor is a species of springtail belonging to the order Collembola and the family Tomoceridae. These minute hexapods are commonly found in damp soil, leaf litter, and decomposing organic matter, playing a significant role in organic breakdown; however, they can occasionally become significant pests in greenhouse and nursery environments.

The damage caused by Tomocerus minor is most prevalent in sensitive, young seedlings. They feed on tender plant tissues, chewing small, irregular holes in cotyledons and stems near the soil surface. High populations of these pests can lead to significant crop loss, particularly in commercial horticulture where high density and moisture create perfect conditions for their development.

As inhabitants of the soil surface, they thrive in humid environments with high organic content.
