Description
Systematic position. Trachelipus belongs to the phylum Arthropoda, subphylum Crustacea, class Malacostraca, order Isopoda, and family Trachelipodidae. Unlike insects, these organisms are terrestrial crustaceans that have retained gill-like respiratory structures, which makes them strictly dependent on high environmental humidity for survival.
Crops damaged. These pests are opportunistic feeders with a cryptic lifestyle. They cause significant damage to vegetables and small fruits, including cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, cabbage, strawberries, and various seedlings. They also frequently infest mushroom farms by damaging mycelium and stored root vegetables in environments with high humidity levels.
Biology and life cycle. Trachelipus species are primarily nocturnal, hiding during the day in soil crevices, beneath plant debris, stones, or mulch. They are highly sensitive to desiccation, which is why they prefer shaded and damp microhabitats. Reproduction occurs by the female carrying eggs in a specialized brood pouch, where offspring develop into miniature versions of the adults.
Character of damage and harm. The pest feeds on tender plant tissues by gnawing holes in stems, leaves, and fruits that touch the soil. These feeding marks weaken the plant’s defenses, often opening the way for secondary fungal infections and rot. Under high infestation pressure, significant damage to seedlings and young plants can lead to total crop failure.
Protection measures. Controlling these pests requires agricultural practices aimed at reducing moisture levels in the root zone and limiting harborages.
- Regular soil cultivation and tilling to destroy shelters.
- Removing debris, boards, and rocks from the field or greenhouse.
- Improving ventilation in greenhouses and polytunnels.
- Applying specific bait stations or natural desiccant powders like diatomaceous earth.
