The Common rough woodlouse (Trachelipus rathkei) is a terrestrial crustacean belonging to the order Isopoda and the family Trachelipodidae. Unlike most crustaceans, this species is fully adapted to land environments, showing a strong preference for damp, shaded locations rich in decaying organic matter, which frequently makes them a nuisance in greenhouses and gardens.

This pest is known to cause damage to a variety of agricultural and horticultural crops. It particularly targets young seedlings, newly transplanted vegetables such as tomatoes and cucumbers, and ripening strawberries lying on the soil. In agricultural settings, they are often attracted to areas with heavy mulch or high humidity, where they can thrive undisturbed.

The biology of Trachelipus rathkei is centered on high humidity requirements and sheltered habitats. They undergo several molts throughout their lifecycle to accommodate growth. Breeding is efficient, with females carrying their offspring in a marsupium, ensuring high survival rates. Being nocturnal, these woodlice emerge at night to feed, spending their daylight hours hidden beneath stones, logs, or soil aggregates.

Feeding damage is characterized by irregular holes and lacerations on plant tissues. While they primarily feed on decaying matter, they readily switch to living plant tissues when populations are high or moisture sources are limited. Such feeding can lead to severe stunting of seedlings, root damage, and in extreme cases, the total destruction of young plantings, negatively impacting crop yield.

Control measures primarily focus on habitat modification and chemical interventions when necessary. Improving drainage, reducing excessive mulching near stems, and increasing greenhouse ventilation are effective preventative steps. Removing debris that provides shelter is crucial for breaking their lifecycle. Where infestations are severe, contact-based insecticides or bait stations can be utilized to manage population density effectively.
