Trachymela sloanei, commonly known as the eucalyptus leaf beetle, is a significant defoliating pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. Originally native to Australia, it has become an invasive threat in various parts of the world where eucalyptus trees are cultivated, causing serious damage to both forestry plantations and urban ornamental landscapes.

The primary hosts of this beetle are species within the Eucalyptus genus. Both adult beetles and larvae are voracious feeders, targeting leaves, buds, and young terminal shoots. Their feeding activity is particularly destructive during the peak growth periods of the trees, leading to substantial foliage loss that compromises the health and vitality of the entire plant.

The life cycle of the beetle is closely tied to the host tree's growth cycles. Eggs are typically laid in crevices or on leaf surfaces. Upon hatching, the larvae undergo multiple instars, feeding continuously on the foliage. The duration of each developmental stage is highly dependent on temperature and humidity, which influences the number of generations per year in different regions.

The damage caused by Trachymela sloanei is characterized by irregular notches and large holes in the leaves.
