Trechus

The genus Trechus belongs to the ground beetle family (Carabidae) within the order Coleoptera. These small predatory beetles are common in soil surfaces, under leaf litter, and in crop residues. While most Carabidae are considered beneficial natural enemies, certain species can exhibit opportunistic feeding behavior, causing damage to germinating seeds and young seedlings of various agricultural crops.

This pest primarily affects the emergence of cereal, technical, and vegetable crops. During the germination stage, when seeds and tender shoots are most vulnerable, the beetles may feed on the embryos of the seeds or gnaw at the stalks of young plants. This type of damage is particularly dangerous in fields with poor seedling vigor or slow germination rates.

The life cycle of Trechus includes egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adults typically overwinter in the soil or under debris. As temperatures rise in the spring, the beetles become active and start their reproductive cycle. The larvae also inhabit the soil, where they develop and contribute to the overall population pressure in the field throughout the growing season.

The damage caused by these beetles manifests as physical destruction of plant tissues near the soil surface. High levels of infestation lead to thinning of crops and can cause significant stand losses. Because the damage occurs early, it often necessitates replanting if the population density of the pest exceeds the economic injury level for the specific region and crop.
