Description

Trichilogaster is a genus of gall-forming wasps belonging to the family Pteromalidae. These insects are notable for their highly specialized relationship with host plants, primarily within the genus Acacia, where they induce the development of abnormal tissue growths known as galls.

Taxonomically, the genus is classified under the order Hymenoptera. Unlike many other members of the Pteromalidae family that are parasitoids of other insects, Trichilogaster species are phytophagous in their larval stages, redirecting plant metabolic resources to create protective structures for their development.

The life cycle begins when an adult female oviposits into the developing flower buds of the host tree. Once the larvae emerge, they feed internally, triggering the plant to form a multilocular gall. The larvae develop and pupate inside this structure, safely isolated from many external environmental stressors and predators, until they emerge as adults to mate and restart the cycle.

The primary economic and ecological impact of this pest is the sterilization of host plants. Because the wasps target floral buds, the development of flowers is disrupted, resulting in significant loss of reproductive output. In ornamental or seed-production settings, heavy infestations can lead to substantial reduction in seed yield and alter the overall health and appearance of the acacia trees.
