Description
The acacia gall wasp (Trichilogaster acaciaelongifoliae) is a species of Hymenoptera belonging to the Pteromalidae family. It is a highly specialized gall-forming wasp that has gained significant attention in agricultural and environmental management for its role in controlling invasive plant species.
The primary host for this insect is Acacia longifolia, commonly known as long-leaved wattle. In its native range, the plant is kept in check by various insects, but in introduced regions such as South Africa, it becomes a major invasive weed, prompting the introduction of the wasp as a biological control agent.
The insect's life cycle is strictly tied to the flowering phenology of the host plant. Adult females oviposit into developing flower buds. The larvae then feed internally, causing the formation of large, multi-chambered galls that disrupt the normal development of flowers and fruit, thereby preventing seed production.
The damage caused by Trichilogaster acaciaelongifoliae is essentially reproductive interference. By turning potential flowers into galls, the wasp drastically reduces the plant's seed bank.
