Ornate checkered beetle

The ornate checkered beetle (Trichodes ornatus) is a member of the Cleridae family within the order Coleoptera. While many checkered beetles are predatory, Trichodes ornatus is well-known for its interaction with flower-bearing plants, where adult beetles feed on pollen and floral parts, causing damage to reproductive structures.

This pest is primarily found in various landscapes, often causing economic concern in gardens, flower farms, and fields where high-value seed crops are grown. The ornate appearance of the adult beetle, characterized by distinct bands, makes it easily identifiable during the flowering season when feeding occurs.

The biological cycle of this insect involves complete metamorphosis. After hatching, the larvae undergo several developmental stages. Interestingly, some larvae are associated with the nests of other insects, while others live in plant debris. This complexity in their life cycle dictates the strategy for monitoring and control.

Damage to plants is primarily caused by adults feeding on flowers. This feeding behavior disrupts fertilization, leading to poor seed set and yield loss. In commercial flower production, the damage can be severe, as the aesthetic quality of the blooms is compromised, rendering the product unmarketable.
