Description
Trichomma is a genus of parasitoid wasps belonging to the family Ichneumonidae. These insects are well-regarded in agricultural science as important biological control agents, as they target various lepidopteran larvae that are known to cause significant damage to crops, orchards, and forest ecosystems.
From a systematic point of view, they fall under the order Hymenoptera. Unlike herbivorous pests, members of this genus act as natural suppressors of harmful species. Their biological structure and sensory systems are highly specialized to locate and parasitize host larvae, often operating in low-light conditions, which is characteristic of the genus.
The life cycle of Trichomma is strictly dependent on its host. The female wasp deposits its eggs inside the body of a host caterpillar. As the parasitoid larva develops within the host, it consumes the tissues from the inside, eventually killing the host. This process effectively reduces the number of pests present in the field without mechanical or chemical intervention.

To protect and encourage Trichomma in agricultural environments, growers should focus on conservation biological control. This involves maintaining non-crop vegetation as a nectar source for adult wasps and strictly limiting the use of broad-spectrum insecticides that could inadvertently kill these beneficial parasitoids. Prioritizing selective pest control methods ensures that the beneficial population remains active to provide natural defense against outbreaks.
