Southern carpet moth

The Southern carpet moth (Trichophaga abruptella) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tineidae. It is widely recognized as a serious pest of stored products, particularly those of animal origin, often causing significant economic losses in storage facilities and households.

This species primarily feeds on materials rich in keratin and other proteins. Its diet includes wool, furs, leather, dried animal specimens, and organic residues. In an agricultural or scientific context, it poses a significant threat to the integrity of seed collections, preserved biological samples, and other organic matter stored in controlled environments.

The biological development of this pest comprises the standard stages of egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is the most destructive phase. These larvae construct protective silken tubes or cases, incorporating food particles and frass, which provides them with high resistance to environmental stress and chemical treatments, making them difficult to eradicate once established.

Damage caused by this pest is easily identifiable by irregular holes and tunneling in materials. The accumulation of frass and webbing renders stored goods visually unappealing and structurally compromised. In high-density infestations, the moth can cause total degradation of stored collections, leading to irreversible loss of valuable biological or commercial resources.

Maintaining low humidity and moderate temperatures is crucial to slowing down the life cycle.
