Tapestry moth

Systematic position. The tapestry moth (Trichophaga tapetzella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tineidae. It is a highly specialized pest known for its ability to infest tough, keratin-rich materials, distinguishing it from other common house moths that typically prefer finer fibers.

Host materials. This moth primarily infests animal-based materials, including thick carpets, wool, felt, furs, and feathers. While not a direct agricultural field pest, it is a significant threat in storage facilities and warehouses where natural fiber goods are kept for long periods, leading to severe degradation of the inventory.

Biology and life cycle. The moth undergoes a complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The female moth lays eggs in crevices of the host material. The larvae are distinguished by their behavior of constructing portable silken cases or extensive tunnels within the fiber, which provide protection while they consume the material. Developmental speed is heavily influenced by ambient temperature and moisture levels.

Damage and pest status. Damage is caused exclusively by the larval stage, which possesses strong mandibles capable of processing coarse fibers. They destroy the structural integrity of fabrics and furs, creating holes and tunnels. Heavy infestations often result in total destruction of the item, as the accumulation of excrement and silk webbing makes the material impossible to clean or restore.

Control measures. Controlling Trichophaga tapetzella requires rigorous sanitation and monitoring. Effective measures include lowering the relative humidity in storage areas and implementing strict cleaning schedules to remove debris where larvae hide. Chemical control involves the use of specialized insecticides, fumigation, and the installation of pheromone-based traps to detect and disrupt the mating cycle of adult moths.
