The common brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) is a marsupial belonging to the order Diprotodontia and the family Phalangeridae. In many agricultural regions, particularly in New Zealand and parts of Australia, it is considered a significant pest that causes substantial economic loss.

This animal is an opportunistic feeder that targets various horticultural crops. It frequently causes damage to fruit trees, such as apples, pears, and citrus, as well as vegetables and floral crops. Their diet shifts depending on the season and the availability of nutrient-rich resources.

The biology of Trichosurus is marked by high reproductive success and adaptability to human-modified landscapes. They are nocturnal and highly territorial, which allows them to establish stable colonies within orchards, ensuring continuous feeding pressure on the crops throughout the year.
