The common brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) is a marsupial belonging to the order Diprotodontia and the family Phalangeridae. Native to Australia but invasive in regions like New Zealand, this animal is classified as a significant agricultural pest due to its destructive feeding habits and rapid population expansion.

This species damages a wide range of horticultural and agricultural crops. It feeds on the leaves, buds, flowers, and fruits of various trees, particularly favoring orchard crops such as apples, pears, peaches, and citrus. In vineyard settings, they are known to strip vines of leaves and consume entire harvests, leading to substantial economic losses for growers.

The biology of the brushtail possum facilitates its success as a pest. As a nocturnal and highly arboreal mammal, it can easily move between trees, bypassing many conventional ground-based defenses. Their reproductive strategy, characterized by high maternal investment, ensures the survival of offspring even in fluctuating environmental conditions, making long-term control challenging.

Damage is not limited to fruit consumption; these possums frequently girdle trees by stripping away the bark. This action disrupts the nutrient transport system, often resulting in tree dieback or total mortality. Furthermore, their presence poses a biosecurity risk, as they act as vectors for various diseases that can affect both commercial crops and livestock production.

Integrated pest management is essential to mitigate the damage caused by these marsupials. Effective strategies include:
