The tadpole shrimp (Triops cancriformis) is a crustacean belonging to the order Notostraca. It is recognized as a significant pest in rice cultivation, particularly in regions where fields are flooded during the early stages of crop establishment.
This organism primarily damages rice crops by feeding on the delicate roots and leaves of young seedlings. Because they live at the bottom of flooded fields, their feeding habits can easily uproot recently germinated seeds, leading to severe stand reduction and yield loss.
The biology of Triops cancriformis is adapted to ephemeral aquatic environments. They produce drought-resistant eggs (cysts) that remain dormant in the soil for years. When the rice field is flooded, these eggs hatch quickly, leading to a population boom that coincides with the vulnerability of the rice crop.
The damage caused by tadpole shrimp is twofold: they physically consume plant tissue and create turbid water conditions while burrowing in the mud. This turbidity blocks sunlight, further stressing the submerged rice seedlings and hindering their initial growth stages.
Management and control strategies are essential for minimizing losses in infested areas:
- Draining fields strategically to expose the bottom and disrupt the shrimp life cycle.
- Using tillage practices to bury or destroy dormant eggs in the soil.
- Applying specific chemical control agents during early flooding if threshold levels are exceeded.
- Monitoring water levels closely and using high-quality seeds to ensure rapid germination before the shrimp population reaches peak density.
