Taxonomic position: The tadpole shrimp (Triops longicaudatus) belongs to the class Branchiopoda, order Notostraca, and family Triopsidae. These crustaceans are primitive arthropods that have survived for millions of years by colonizing ephemeral freshwater environments.

Crops and damage: Tadpole shrimp are primarily known as significant pests in rice production. They affect the crop during the early seedling stage. By foraging in the soil layer, these crustaceans disturb the root systems of young rice plants, leading to the uprooting and subsequent death of the seedlings.

Biology and life cycle: The species possesses a dormant egg phase known as cysts. These cysts are highly resistant to desiccation and can remain viable in the soil for over a decade. Upon flooding of rice fields and favorable water temperatures, the eggs hatch rapidly. They reach reproductive maturity in as little as one to two weeks, allowing for explosive population growth.

Nature of damage: The primary harm is mechanical damage to roots and leaves of submerged or floating rice seedlings. Furthermore, their movement causes intense water turbidity. This muddy water hinders photosynthesis in the submerged seedlings, prevents proper rooting, and can cause significant stand losses if the infestation is severe.

Protection measures: Integrated management strategies are essential for controlling tadpole shrimp populations:

  • Strategic water management, including drainage during critical infestation periods.
  • Application of specific chemical treatments approved for rice cultivation.
