The carrot psyllid (Trioza apicalis) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Triozidae. It is primarily known for causing severe damage to carrot crops across Europe and parts of Asia, acting as a major agricultural constraint for carrot producers.
The pest primarily infests plants in the Apiaceae family, including carrots, celery, parsley, and parsnips. While carrots are the main commercial host, the psyllid can survive on various wild umbelliferous weeds, which serve as an alternative food source during the growing season.
The biology of Trioza apicalis is characterized by a specific migration pattern. Adults overwinter on coniferous trees, particularly spruce. In the spring, they migrate to carrot fields. Eggs are laid on the margins of carrot leaves, and upon hatching, the nymphs begin feeding on the plant's vascular tissue.
The damage caused by the carrot psyllid is distinctive. Feeding triggers a reaction in the host plant, resulting in curled, stunted, and reddish-purple foliage. This condition is often referred to as "carrot psyllid yellows." Affected carrots develop poorly, producing small, woody roots that are unfit for market.
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Cultural practices such as choosing planting sites away from spruce forests are critical. During the peak migration period, physical barriers like insect-proof netting can be used. Chemical control involves the application of registered insecticides timed with the initial arrival of the insects.
