Description
Systematic position: The Laurel psyllid (Trioza litseae) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Triozidae. These insects, often called jumping plant lice, are highly specialized sap-feeders that have co-evolved with their host plants to exploit nutrient-rich tissues during the active growing season.
Host plants: The primary host for this species is the bay laurel (Laurus nobilis). While it thrives on wild laurel bushes, it can also cause significant economic damage in commercial plantations or nurseries where bay leaves are cultivated for culinary and ornamental purposes.
Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Trioza litseae is intrinsically linked to the flushing of new leaves on the host plant. Females lay eggs on developing foliage, and the emerging nymphs settle on the underside of the leaves.
