Avocado triozid

The avocado triozid (Trioza perseae) is a hemipteran insect belonging to the family Triozidae. It is recognized as a significant pest specifically targeting avocado trees, causing substantial damage to foliage and hindering the normal physiological development of the plant.

The primary host for this species is the avocado (Persea americana). The pest causes damage mainly by sucking sap from tender, young leaves and growing shoots, which are vital for the tree's development. This feeding activity leads to significant nutrient depletion and physiological stress in the plant.

The life cycle of Trioza perseae is strictly associated with the flushing periods of the host tree. It undergoes incomplete metamorphosis, including the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The nymphs are sedentary feeders that remain fixed in place, triggering host tissue responses that result in visible deformations.

Damage is characterized by the formation of galls or characteristic pittings on the leaves, leading to curling, yellowing, and necrosis of the leaf margins. Heavy infestations result in premature leaf drop, stunted tree growth, and a reduction in the quality and quantity of fruit production.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for this pest involves several key strategies:

• Regular field monitoring using yellow sticky cards to detect the presence of adults.
• Mechanical removal and destruction of heavily infested leaf flushes.
• Strategic application of systemic insecticides during peak infestation periods.
• Encouraging natural biological control agents, including various species of parasitic wasps and generalist predators.

Maintaining vigorous tree health through balanced fertilization and adequate irrigation is also recommended, as weakened plants are more susceptible to severe damage. Continuous observation of young plantations is critical, as they are the most vulnerable to damage caused by Trioza perseae during their early establishment years.
