The nettle sucker (Trioza urticae) is a small insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Triozidae. As the name suggests, it is primarily associated with the nettle plant. This pest is widely distributed and utilizes specific plant structures to complete its developmental stages, often resulting in visible changes to the morphology of the host plant.

The life cycle of Trioza urticae is complex, consisting of egg, five larval stages, and the adult stage. The insect overwinters as an adult, typically hiding in protected areas such as bark crevices or leaf litter during the cold months. With the onset of spring, adults emerge to mate and lay eggs on young, tender nettle foliage, marking the beginning of a new generation.

The most distinctive feature of the damage caused by this species is the formation of galls. As larvae feed on the leaf tissues, they secrete substances that induce the plant to form protective, tumor-like growths. Within these galls, the larvae live and feed protected from external environmental factors. This process disrupts the plant’s nutrient transport and photosynthesis, often causing severe curling or yellowing of the leaves.
