Eucalyptus psyllid

Triozoida limbata belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Triozidae. This insect is a specialized pest that primarily affects plants of the genus Eucalyptus. Due to its host-specific nature, it can become a serious problem in areas where eucalyptus trees are cultivated, causing both aesthetic and physiological damage.

The host range is essentially limited to Eucalyptus species. The pest targets young leaves and shoots, which are the most tender parts of the plant. By attacking these areas, the insect interferes with the plant's structural integrity, causing localized tissue malformations known as galls, which serve as protection for the developing larvae.

The life cycle begins when an adult female deposits eggs on young eucalyptus foliage. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately start feeding, inducing the plant to create a gall structure around them. This unique interaction ensures the larvae remain protected from environmental hazards and many predators until they reach the adult stage.

The damage caused by Triozoida limbata is primarily characterized by the formation of numerous galls on the leaves. This leads to leaf curling, chlorosis, and premature senescence. In severe infestations, the cumulative loss of leaf surface area inhibits the tree’s photosynthetic capacity, causing stunted growth and, in younger plants, a significant decline in overall health.
