Description
The Baccharis leaf beetle (Trirhabda baccharidis) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Chrysomelidae family. This beetle is a specialized herbivore that feeds almost exclusively on shrubs within the Baccharis genus. Its ecological role is significant as it can act as a natural defoliator, though it is often considered a pest in areas where the host plant's health is desired.
The primary host for this species is Baccharis halimifolia. The larvae and adults are highly host-specific, feeding on the foliage of these shrubs. While they are sometimes studied for their potential to control invasive Baccharis populations, they can be problematic in ornamental gardening or specific conservation areas where host plant preservation is the priority.

Chemical control is effective using systemic or contact insecticides during the early larval stage when the insects are most vulnerable. For smaller or ornamental stands, manual removal or pruning of heavily infested branches can reduce local populations. Encouraging natural predators, such as predatory beetles and parasitic wasps, remains a key component of long-term sustainable management.
