The spruce bud mite (Trisetacus ehmanni) is a microscopic pest belonging to the family Phytoptidae within the superfamily Eriophyoidea. These tiny arthropods reside primarily within the buds of conifer trees, making them challenging to detect until damage becomes significantly visible to the naked eye.
The primary host plants for Trisetacus ehmanni are various species of spruce (Picea). By feeding on the meristematic tissues inside the buds, the mites interfere with the tree's normal growth processes, often leading to stunted shoot development and compromised tree vigor.
The biological cycle of this mite is highly synchronized with the tree's phenology. Overwintering females emerge to feed and lay eggs during the spring budding period. The life cycle involves multiple generations per year, with dispersal occurring primarily through wind drift and contact transfer between adjacent branches.
