Cypress mite

Trisetacus macrocarpae (family Eriophyidae, order Trombidiformes) is a microscopic gall mite that specializes in infesting coniferous trees. This pest belongs to the family of four-legged mites, characterized by extremely small, microscopic bodies and a vermiform shape, making them difficult to detect without specialized equipment.

The primary host plants susceptible to this species include members of the Cupressaceae family, particularly the Monterey cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa), junipers, and arborvitae. In nursery settings and ornamental landscapes, these mites can cause significant damage, compromising the aesthetic value and overall vigor of the host trees.

The lifecycle of the pest is closely synchronized with the host plant's phenology. Adult females overwinter within bark scales, buds, or at the base of needles. As temperatures rise at the beginning of the growing season, they resume feeding and egg-laying. Multiple generations can occur within a single season, leading to rapid population growth under favorable climatic conditions.

Damage typically manifests as morphological abnormalities in the shoots. Infestation causes deformation, stunted needle growth, yellowing, and premature needle drop. Feeding sites may develop galls or characteristic swelling, eventually resulting in dieback of individual branches. Severe infestations can significantly weaken a tree and, in some cases, lead to mortality.

Effective control requires targeted treatments during the bud-break phase when the mites are most active and exposed. Rotating between different chemical classes of acaricides is essential to prevent the development of resistance in the pest population, ensuring sustained management of this persistent coniferous pest.
