Pine bud mite

Systematic position. The pine bud mite (Trisetacus strobiphagus) is a member of the Trombidiformes order and the Eriophyidae family. These are microscopic mites that inhabit the buds and soft tissues of coniferous trees, acting as specialized parasites that cause significant structural changes to the host plant.

Affected crops. The pest primarily targets various species within the Pinus genus, including the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus). It is particularly detrimental in pine nurseries, young plantations, and ornamental stands where the dense growth allows for rapid spread between trees.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Trisetacus strobiphagus is synchronized with the bud development of the host pine. The mites overwinter as adults or larvae within the protective scales of the buds. With the arrival of spring, they resume feeding, and as the host begins its vegetative growth, the mite population undergoes rapid reproduction, spreading to new buds throughout the season.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. The feeding activity of the mites triggers the formation of galls, causing the buds to swell and deform. These infested buds typically fail to produce normal growth, leading to stunted or distorted shoots. Severe infestations cause terminal bud death, which forces the tree to develop lateral branches, resulting in abnormal, bushy, or stunted growth patterns that decrease the market value of the timber or ornamental tree.

Protection measures. Effective control requires an integrated approach due to the mite's protected environment.

• Pruning and destroying infested shoots in winter to reduce the overwintering population.
• Applying systemic acaricides specifically timed to the period of spring bud movement.
• Ensuring proper spacing and sanitation of plantations to prevent the rapid migration of mites.
• Monitoring nurseries to ensure only mite-free seedlings are planted.
