The Thuja mite (Trisetacus thujivagrans) is a microscopic pest classified under the order Trombidiformes and the family Eriophyidae, commonly known as gall mites. These organisms are elongated and worm-like in appearance, measuring roughly 0.2 mm in length. Due to their minute size, they are rarely seen by the naked eye, making them difficult to detect until significant damage to the host plant is already visible.

This pest specifically targets coniferous species, primarily within the genus Thuja. It thrives by feeding on the sap of the needles and tender shoots. The mite is particularly attracted to the scale-like foliage of arborvitae plants, where it colonizes, reproduces, and causes physiological stress to the plant tissue during the growing season.

The lifecycle of Trisetacus thujivagrans is highly dependent on environmental temperature. The adult females overwinter in protected areas of the tree, such as under the scales of the foliage or within the crevices of young branches. As spring temperatures rise, they emerge to lay eggs, starting a cycle that produces multiple generations throughout the summer. Culturally, maintaining tree vigor through appropriate watering and spacing is crucial for resilience. When an infestation is confirmed, the application of targeted acaricides is necessary.
