Description
The great crested newt (Triturus cristatus) belongs to the order Caudata and the family Salamandridae. From an agronomic perspective, this species is not classified as a plant pest. It is an exclusively carnivorous amphibian that feeds on a variety of small invertebrates, including garden slugs and insect larvae, which are common threats to crops. Thus, its presence is generally considered beneficial for ecosystem balance.
The life cycle of the species is biphasic, involving both aquatic and terrestrial stages. Reproduction occurs in ponds, where eggs are carefully deposited on submerged vegetation. Following the larval stage, adult newts spend the majority of their time in humid terrestrial habitats, such as hedge bottoms, wood piles, or densely vegetated areas, seeking protection from desiccation.
There is no evidence that the great crested newt consumes or damages vegetable tissues. Reports of damage attributed to this species are often based on misidentification of the true culprits, such as snails or rodents, which the newt itself may actually be preying upon. Potential damage is limited to minor physical disturbance of soil or seedlings during their movement in extremely damp greenhouses or seedbeds.
The biological significance of Triturus cristatus lies in its role as a natural predator. In a sustainable farming system, the newt contributes to the natural suppression of pests. Because of their porous skin, newts are highly sensitive to fertilizers and pesticides. Their presence serves as a bioindicator of healthy, non-polluted soil conditions, which is a positive sign for any agricultural site.
Management practices, if the presence of newts is undesirable in specific high-sensitivity areas, focus on habitat modification:
