Description

The genus Trochosa belongs to the family Lycosidae, commonly known as wolf spiders. These ground-dwelling arachnids do not construct webs to capture prey but instead hunt actively on the soil surface. In agricultural terms, it is crucial to recognize that these spiders are primarily predators rather than phytophagous pests, and they rarely cause any harm to crops.

Trochosa spiders typically inhabit leaf litter, spaces beneath stones, or shallow burrows. Their biological cycle involves a maternal stage where the female carries her egg sac, followed by offspring development within the soil micro-habitat. These spiders are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular, which often makes them less visible during the day.

Unlike true agricultural pests, Trochosa species do not consume plant tissues, extract sap, or damage foliage. In fact, they function as beneficial entomophages. By feeding on various small insects and larvae present in the soil, they often contribute to the natural suppression of actual crop-damaging pests, serving as biological control agents.

However, the presence of a high population density of these spiders can sometimes worry growers, particularly in greenhouses or under thick mulch layers where high humidity supports their survival. Since they do not cause direct economic loss to the harvest, intentional eradication programs are rarely recommended and are often counterproductive.

If their presence is undesirable due to agricultural operations, cultural practices are the most effective management tools. These methods discourage their nesting habitats without resorting to harmful insecticides.
