Description

Systematic position. The rice weevil, scientifically associated with Troglodytes in historical taxonomical records, belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as one of the most significant cosmopolitan pests of stored cereal grains, causing substantial economic losses worldwide.

Affected crops. The pest is a generalist feeder that primarily attacks various cereal grains including rice, wheat, maize, sorghum, and barley. It can also infest processed grain products like flour, pasta, and even cereal-based snacks if stored under favorable conditions for an extended period.

Biology and life cycle. The adult female uses its rostrum to bore a hole into the kernel, deposits an egg inside, and seals it with a gelatinous plug. The larva feeds entirely inside the grain, passing through four instars before pupating. The life cycle is temperature-dependent and can be completed in approximately one month under optimal conditions.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. The primary damage is caused by the developing larvae that consume the endosperm, leaving only the outer seed coat. This results in significant weight loss and nutrient depletion of the grain. Infested batches often become overheated, creating hotspots that favor the development of fungal pathogens and mold contamination.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial. Key strategies include drying grain to moisture levels below 14% and maintaining cool storage temperatures. Sanitation of storage bins and the use of chemical fumigants are essential for treating active infestations in grain silos to prevent large-scale crop spoilage.
