Description
Systematic position: Tropilaelaps clareae is a parasitic mite belonging to the order Mesostigmata and the family Laelapidae. Originally found on giant honey bees in Asia, it has become a major threat to the European honey bee (Apis mellifera), requiring urgent attention from beekeepers globally.
Host range: The primary host of this pest is the honey bee species Apis mellifera. Unlike some other mites, it relies heavily on the presence of bee brood for its survival and reproduction, as it feeds on the hemolymph of developing larvae and pupae within the sealed comb cells.
Biology and life cycle: The mite's life cycle is strictly tied to the honey bee brood. Adult females enter brood cells just before they are capped. They lay eggs, and the progeny mature alongside the developing bee. The reproduction rate of Tropilaelaps is faster than that of Varroa destructor, allowing the population to explode within a single colony in a short period.
Nature of damage and pathogenicity: Infestation causes severe damage to the brood, leading to developmental deformities, stunted growth, and high mortality rates of larvae. Surviving adult bees are often weak and have shortened lifespans. This leads to reduced honey production, colony exhaustion, and frequent absconding of the entire bee colony when the infestation level is high.
Management strategies: The most effective management technique involves brood interruption, as the mite cannot survive long without brood cells. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) includes using acaricides and physical monitoring of mite drop counts. Maintaining strong, hygienic colonies and implementing strict biosecurity measures in the apiary are essential for controlling the spread of this parasite.
