Trypetesa (lat. Trypetesa) is a genus of burrowing barnacles that primarily affect calcified substrates. From a systematic perspective, this organism belongs to the order Pygophorida and the family Trypetesidae. While not a typical agricultural pest of terrestrial crops, its presence is a significant concern within the aquaculture sector, where it interacts with economically valuable mollusks.

These organisms do not damage traditional field plants but specifically target various species of bivalve mollusks used in mariculture. By burrowing into the shells of hosts such as oysters and mussels, the pest compromises the integrity of the shell, which serves as the primary defense mechanism for the mollusk against external environmental pressures and predators.

The biology and lifecycle of Trypetesa are characterized by specialized boring behavior. The life cycle involves a planktonic larval stage that identifies a suitable host shell. Once attached, the organism undergoes metamorphosis and begins the process of drilling into the shell material using both chemical secretions and mechanical abrasion, eventually residing inside a created cavity.

Although the pest does not feed on the mollusk's tissues directly, the creation of deep burrows induces chronic stress, depletes the energy reserves of the host, and significantly diminishes the commercial value of the product due to shell deformity and increased vulnerability to disease outbreaks.
